NOTE TO EDITORS:

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) will meet in St. Johns, January 29-30, 1998. The meeting will take place at the Hotel Newfoundland and will be chaired by CCME President, Oliver Langdon, Minister of Environment and Labour for Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ministers will discuss a Canada-wide Accord on Environmental Cooperation, follow-up to the Third Conference of the parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change in Kyoto, Japan and the results of the 1996 packaging survey. As well, the first annual Pollution Prevention Awards will be presented to winners at a ceremony on Thursday evening at approximately 8:30 p.m. in Salons C and D of the Hotel Newfoundland. Media are invited to attend the ceremony.

A news conference will be held at 12:30 on Friday, January 30 in Salon B of the Hotel Newfoundland. A communique will be issued just prior to the news conference.
