NEW UNDERTAKING REGISTERED

Buchans Barite Plant (Reactivation)
Proponent: United Bolero Development Corporation

The proponent proposes to reactivate the Buchans Barite Plant to produce barite for offshore drilling. This plant is located on the western edge of the community. Feed for the plant will be from Tailings Pond #1. The tailings ponds at Buchans contain approximately 1,500,000 tons of tailings with an average grade of 30 per cent barite. Mining of the tailings will be on dry exposed tailings and not from within the pond itself. The "Glory Hole" pit will be used for tailings disposal and water supply. Construction work involves refurbishing the mill building and equipment and installation of a new electrical service and water line. Reactivation of the plant is expected to take two to three months. The project was registered on January 20, 1998, public comments must be received by February 20, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on March 6, 1998.

Newfoundland Bison Farming
Proponent: Newfoundland Beef Producers Association

The proponent proposes to import bison to be raised as farm animals utilizing existing farmland, most likely cattle farms, throughout the province. The bison will be used for breeding stock, meat and by-products. Indications are that a maximum of four modest herds totalling 40 animals will be set up initially. Construction activities will be minimal since operations will be set up on established farms. The project was registered on January 20, 1998, public comments must be received by February 20, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on March 6, 1998.
