Committee to find new mechanism for allocating student assistant hours

Roger Grimes, Minister of Education, announced today that he has asked representatives of NAPE, the union that represents student assistants, NLTA, NLSBA and parents, to meet with Department of Education representatives to find a new approach to the allocation of student assistant hours.

"The annual disruption that has been occurring for many special needs students at the opening of school each year is clearly unacceptable," stated the minister. "While there are understandable reasons for the disruption in the last couple of years due to changes in the process each year, the fact that a disruption has annually occurred must be addressed."

The minister is hopeful that the advice given will give rise to a system whereby special needs children will be fully aware of the level of services available for them before they leave school the previous year. The only circumstances where any uncertainty might legitimately arise are when a child's circumstance changes drastically over the summer break due to accident, injury or illness, or because of school closure or the child relocating to another school.

The minister will ask the group to begin dealing with the issue immediately and to conclude their discussions with firm recommendations before Christmas.
