Government today announced status of student placements

Education Minister, Roger Grimes, today announced that most of the displaced students are now in classes or starting classes in the next week.

On Monday, most of the 1400 students were asked to report to various receiving institutions in the province for further updates on their placements. As a result, many of the students immediately started classes and others were told classes would begin next Monday.

"This has been a difficult time for everyone, especially the students," said Mr. Grimes, "and I am glad that most students took advantage of the arrangements put in place to enable them to continue their training as quickly as possible."

Mr. Grimes said that almost 100 percent of the students in the Corner Brook area resumed classes yesterday, with the same instructors for the most part. In Gander, students in all programs are expected to begin classes or on-the-job-training this Monday. In the Spaniard's Bay, Conception Bay South, and St. John's area, most of the students have also returned to classes or will be resuming classes this Monday.

"Officials of the Department of Education are continuing to meet with students to address their concerns and help them through this transitional period," said Mr. Grimes, "and we are continuing to work as quickly as possible to resolve the issues of those students yet to be placed."

Mr. Grimes said discussions are ongoing with the Newfoundland Dental Board and the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada with respect to accreditation and licensing issues for the Dental Assistant program. The Health Science school of the College of the North Atlantic has agreed to administer the program under the auspice of the Newfoundland Dental Board.

"A meeting is scheduled for tomorrow with representatives from the College of the North Atlantic in an effort to finalize placement arrangements for students in the Aircraft Electronic Technician and Aircraft Maintenance Technician programs," said Mr. Grimes, "and a meeting is being held this evening with Provincial Airlines and a decision should be made by tomorrow about whether students in the Professional Pilot program will continue training in St. John's."
