Government releases update for students

Education Minister Roger Grimes announced that tentative arrangements with various institutions in the province for approximately 1,100 students have been made. It will take a few more days to accommodate students in programs that were unique to the Career Academy.

For the most part, students will be placed in the same program in the same community. Tentative arrangements with other private institutions have been made for the following programs: Animal Care; Business programs; Cosmetology; Early Childhood Education; Electronics Servicing Technician; Information Technology; Microcomputer Specialist; Pharmacy Technician and; Travel and Tourism.

"It is the Department of Education's goal to accommodate all students. Officials of the department are preparing to meet with groups of students, by program, over the next few days, including students in Gander, Corner Brook, Trinity-Conception, and Conception Bay South," said Mr. Grimes.

Mr. Grimes advises workterm students to continue attending their workterm placement and if currently placed workterm students are experiencing difficulty to call (709) 729-2187. Students should also be advised that student loans cannot be released to students until a firm decision has been made on what institute students will be attending.

Students that have completed their training but have not yet received their diplomas are advised that over the next few days the department will make an announcement about the issuing of their diplomas. The diplomas will be issued by the receiving institution or directly by the Department of Education.

"Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) officials have assured the department that they will continue to support their clients throughout this transition period," said Mr. Grimes, "and the Department of Education will continue to provide students with updates on a daily basis."
