June 1998 senior high school results

The Minister of Education, Roger D. Grimes, today released the final achievement results for students who were in senior high school during the 1997-98 school year.

This year approximately 30,000 students were enrolled in the senior high school program. These students completed a total of 224,067 course evaluations, achieving an overall pass rate on these courses of 91 per cent. Of the 6,495 candidates in their final year of high school who met graduation requirements, 700 (10 per cent) graduated with Distinction and 2,053 (31 per cent) graduated with honours.

This year also marked the first administration of the new provincial examination in Chemistry 3202, which was based on the common Atlantic Provinces Curriculum prepared for senior high school students. This examination was developed and validated by teachers and testing experts from the four provinces and administered and marked locally.

The Chemistry 3202 examination was written by 3,029 students and corrected by a marking board of Newfoundland teachers in this province. The final mark for a student in this course was obtained through a 50-50 blend of the examination mark and the mark submitted from the school which measured the student's achievement throughout the year. The overall average mark for students in this course was 72 and the provincial pass rate was 94 per cent.

The supplementary examination for students wishing to improve their mark in Chemistry 3202 this year is to be written at their high school on September 8, 1998, at 1 p.m. Students wishing to register for the supplementary examination can do so by writing the Department of Education, High School Certification Section, Division of Evaluation, Testing, and Certification, Confederation Building, St. John's, A1B 4J6, or phoning (709) 729-3003 or (709) 729-1905, or faxing (709) 729-0611.

Official transcripts were mailed out to individual students on July 15 and summaries of overall results are now being forwarded to schools and school districts.
