Government relieved teacher contract dispute resolved

The Minister of Education, Roger Grimes, says government is pleased that teachers have accepted the latest contract proposal with 61 per cent voting in favour. "Finally we can put to rest the pension issue," said Mr. Grimes. "This has been a troublesome issue for the teachers and government for more than a decade."

Under the new agreement, government will pay $815 million to the teachers pension plan including a lump sum payment of $650 million. Government will make a further contribution of $165 million in return for benefit modifications agreed to by the NLTA. Through increased contributions, the NLTA and government will each contribute another $20 million.

"We now look forward to working with the NLTA on educational priorities such as curriculum and professional development," stated Mr. Grimes. "As well, we will work together through committees in an attempt to resolve issues relating to teacher workload, especially the workload of school-based administrators."

Mr. Grimes paid tribute to teachers for working with government to put more stability back into education as the reform process continues.

"I am particularly pleased that teachers have agreed to retire only at Christmas or year end and they are to be congratulated for that initiative," he concluded.
