Minister encourages the public to SKIP-A-LUNCH

Education Minister Roger Grimes is encouraging the public to SKIP-A-LUNCH on Thursday, May 21 to help the St. John's Lunch Association in their efforts to raise awareness on child poverty and its effects on children's education.

The St. John's Lunch Association provides children with a hot, nutritious meal, regardless of their families' economic background. Parents pay for the meals in advance and parents who cannot afford to pay will still have lunch provided for their children. By doing this, a child does not feel singled-out from their peers and classmates as `poor.' Since the St. John's Lunch Association opened in 1989 more than 800,000 meals have been provided for local-area school children. The Association would like people to SKIP-A-LUNCH and donate the money they would have spent on a meal to the Hot Lunch Program.

"I encourage everyone to participate in the SKIP-A-LUNCH initiative on May 21 to help give a child the opportunity to receive a nutritious meal that may not have been possible if it wasn't for the Association's Hot Lunch Program," said Mr. Grimes. "The St. John's Lunch Association offers a great program that, most importantly, helps the children."

Join the hundreds of people, including the minister, who are planning to participate in the SKIP-A-LUNCH initiative on May 21. If you would like more information on the program and how you can help, contact the St. John's Lunch Association at (709) 754-5323.
