Beverley Young awarded 1998 Scholarship to Lester B.
Pearson College of the Pacific, British Columbia

Roger Grimes, Minister of Education, today announced the name of the level II student awarded the scholarship to attend the Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, British Columbia. Beverley Young, a second year high school student at Herdman Collegiate, Corner Brook will attend Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific. These studies will begin in September 1998.

This scholarship is worth $22,000 and covers tuition, books, room and board for two years of study at Pearson.

Lester Pearson College is one of the eight United World Colleges situated around the world. These colleges are dedicated to the promotion of international understanding by creating an environment in which students from many countries and cultures are brought together to study and to serve the community. Students graduate with the world respected International Baccalaureate Diploma which largely replaces the 12th grade and the university freshman year throughout North America. Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan is the President of the United World Colleges and Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of South Africa, is the President of the United World Colleges International Council.

This year's winner is one of about 500 scholarship winners chosen on a competitive basis from more than 75 countries around the world. Beverley won her scholarship on the basis of high academic achievement and qualities of character made evident in a detailed application form and a personal interview.

A selection committee, composed of representatives from the Department of Education, Memorial University of Newfoundland, the Newfoundland Teachers' Association and the school districts screened the applications, carried out the interviews and decided the winner of this year's scholarship.

The minister noted that the 1996 winner of the Pearson Scholarship, Erin Noel from Brother Rice High School, will graduate this spring with the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Jeff Conway from Brother Rice High School, who is attending Pearson, and David Thomas from Musgravetown Central High, who is attending the College of the Atlantic in Wales, UK, are the 1997 winners and they will be returning to their respective colleges in the fall for their second and final year.
