Focus groups to take place on new common religious education curriculum

The Minister of Education Roger Grimes said progress is being made on the development of new common religious education courses for the students of Newfoundland and Labrador. The department is now ready to circulate a draft curriculum framework document to key stakeholders for discussion and consideration.

Mr. Grimes says the draft document, which provides a broad view of the religious education curriculum for K-12, will be discussed at focus group sessions planned for Corner Brook, February 9; Happy Valley-Goose Bay, February 10; St. John's, February 12; and Gander, February 13. Following these focus sessions, the input received will be considered for the development of the religious education curriculum for each grade level.

Two religious education program development specialists, one from Mount Pearl Integrated Senior High and the other from Bishop O'Neill Roman Catholic Collegiate in Brigus, are now on staff. Mr. Grimes says both of these individuals have considerable expertise and experience in the area of religious education and curriculum development.

Under the new Term 17, parents will still have the right to choose whether or not their children participate in the new common religion program when it is fully implemented.

The document may be accessed online at www.stemnet.nf.ca/DeptEd/rel/index.html, or a copy may be obtained from the Department of Education. Response to the draft document may be submitted electronically via the web site or in written form to:
