Education Minister calls for more air quality testing in schools

The Minister of Education, Roger Grimes, has written all 10 school districts requesting immediate assistance in identifying schools with suspected air quality problems. Mr. Grimes has asked the boards to compile a priority list of what they consider high risk schools.

"This information from the 10 school districts will provide the necessary data for a new round of testing for a number of schools following complaints that air quality was a factor in student illnesses," said Mr. Grimes. Following receipt of this information from the boards, an action and implementation plan will be formulated. The department has also established an indoor air quality committee to consider the interim and long term measures required to deal with air quality problems.

The government allocated $2.5 million in last year's budget to address air quality in schools. As a result, some schools have already had new ventilation systems installed and others are currently in the process of having their air quality problems rectified.

"We want to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the health and safety of students, teachers, and other workers in our schools is not compromised," said the minister.
