Silver Salute Savings booklet launched

Beaton Tulk, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal, was in Conception Bay South last night (November 24) to help officially launch the town's Silver Salute Savings Booklet, a promotion designed to encourage people to shop locally. This project was supported by the town council of Conception Bay South, the Industrial Adjustments Committee, the Chamber of Commerce and the federal and provincial governments.

To help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Town of CBS and to promote the Chamber of Commerce in the town, the Department of Development and Rural Renewal and the federal department of Human Resources Canada, supported a co-operative initiative to encourage residents of CBS to shop locally.

The Silver Salute Savings was initially started by the Business Committee of the IAS. This group of volunteers worked with the Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Conception Bay South to develop a co-operative marketing campaign. The total project costs were approximately $13,000. The Department of Rural Renewal provided $4,000, and the Department of Human Resources Canada provided $2,500. The town assisted by developing the map for the booklet and assisting with the cost of distribution of the booklet to 6,000 residents. The remaining $6,500 was contributed by the businesses that advertised in the booklet.

"This is an example of the cooperative initiatives that we need in this province. When residents support the local businesses of their town and the businesses begin cooperatively promoting each other then we are all winners," said Minister Tulk.

Ralph Wiseman who represents the District of Topsail in the House of Assembly said he is pleased to see this project move forward. "I want to recognize the many volunteers who have been involved in getting this project to this stage and I want to encourage all residents to use this booklet and participate in the contest."

If residents used 40 of the 64 coupons in the booklet they can then quality for a grand prize of $500 to be awarded in late February. For more information contact the Conception Bay South Chamber of Commerce.
