Global Vision - Junior Team Canada

The Minister of Development and Rural Renewal Beaton Tulk is pleased that young people from around the province are gathering for a two-day conference in St. John's to be exposed to international business opportunities and practices.

The Junior Team Canada Training Centre, hosted at Memorial University, is one of a dozen workshops being held across Canada by Global Vision, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing tomorrow's leaders with the business and technical skills which will enable them to create their own niche in the global economy. This is the first year one of these workshops is being held in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"There are two key factors to Newfoundland's economic growth outlook," the minister said. "One of these is to build entrepreneurial attitudes and skills among our young people, and the other is the ability to capitalize on business opportunities in the global market place. The Junior Team Canada training workshop is significant because it will address both of these." The workshop consists of two days of seminars, workshops and group work relating to doing business in the international market place. Participants will also have an opportunity to compete for positions on a Junior Team Canada international trade mission later this summer.

The minister noted he is particularly pleased that many of the Regional Economic Development Boards have chosen to send youth representatives to the two-day conference. Regional Economic Development Boards have a key role to play in promoting entrepreneurship and new business opportunities in communities throughout the Province. "It is encouraging to see that REDBs are investing in young people who have demonstrated an interest in contributing to economic growth in their communities," Minister Tulk said.

The Department of Development and Rural Renewal has a mandate for promoting entrepreneurship throughout the province. Departmental officials will be delivering a Getting the Message Out presentation, designed to highlight non-traditional sectors of the economy which already show real potential for new business formations. Part of the message in this program addresses the opportunities for growth provided by the global marketplace. The presentation should demonstrate to conference participants the real success that is possible in international markets.
