Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, today announced a $1 million Highway Maintenance and Safety Program.

Mr. Matthews said: "Under the program, 400 hectares of brush will be cleared throughout all regions of the province. Brush clearing involves the management and control of all vegetation on highway rights- of-way. It increases safety and improves the appearance of our highways.

"This project is labour intensive and is expected to result in 15,000 person days of work."

Brush cutting increases motorists' sight distances on curves and intersections; helps drivers to maintain an unobstructed view of hazards (particularly moose); makes road signs more visible; improves drainage on highways; helps with snow removal; and minimizes icy pavement conditions.

The 32 individual brush cutting projects that make up this $1 million program will be announced over the next few days. The minister said that the projects will be carried out, under contract, largely by development associations and town councils.
