Ernie McLean, Minister Responsible for Labrador, and Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, today announced that a $8,336,090 contract has been awarded to S. M. Construction of Stephenville Crossing for upgrading of the Trans Labrador Highway from Bob's Brook to Cache River, approximately 38 kilometres.

Mr. McLean said: "During this construction season, $2.5 million will be spent on the project. Work will be carried out over two seasons and the project is expected to be completed by September 1999.

"The awarding of this contracts brings to five the number of contracts awarded to date and fulfills government's commitment to spend $20 million this year on upgrading the TLH Highway between Happy Valley- Goose Bay and Labrador West.

"Work on the four previously announced contracts is progressing on schedule and planning is well underway for Phase II of the TLH between Red Bay and Cartwright. The Department of Works, Services and Transportation will shortly register Phase II of the project under the Environmental Assessment Act.

"I am pleased that these contracts have been awarded in such a timely fashion and that much work has already been completed."
