Note to Editors: Signing Agreement - Provision of Highway Maintenance Operations

Lloyd Matthews, Minister of Works Services and Transportation, and Dave Curtis, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public Employees, will sign an agreement tomorrow (Tuesday, May 27) which will see the department and NAPE take a new direction with respect to provision of highway maintenance and snow clearing operations on the Avalon Peninsula next winter.

Earlier this month, the minister and Mr. Curtis agreed to a proposal in which government offered to cease any further work on privatizing its highways operations in favour of an alternate pilot project.

The alternate pilot project will see a joint management-employee committee work together to identify a reasonable degree of substantive savings in the form of productivity and service improvements.

The signing ceremony will take place at 10:45 a.m. in the Media Centre, Main Floor, East Block, Confederation Building. In attendance will be Mr. Matthews, Mr. Curtis and the committee co-chairs.
