Change Islands residents resume ferry protest

Residents of Change Islands have resumed their protest against the ferry service. The Beaumont Hamel is being detained after making its designated midday run to the island. Julie Bettney, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, says that "despite all attempts on the part of government to address the residents' concerns, the people have decided to reject our latest offer and have chosen to disrupt service to both Fogo Island and Change Islands."

Bettney announced on January 24 that her department could accommodate the residents' original requests. The Hamilton Sound would remain docked overnight at Change Islands until March 31, 1997 to respond to emergencies on the island. In addition last year's winter schedule was implemented, providing an extra hour at the end of the day.

Residents have rejected these changes. They are demanding a daily two-boat service, with the Hamilton Sound dedicated to the Change Islands run. Bettney says traffic volumes do not warrant operating the Hamilton Sound year round between Change Islands and the mainland. "It is unfortunate that the residents have chosen to take this action. Government is now left with no recourse but to seek a court injunction. We have an obligation to ensure that all who rely on the service, in particular the residents of Fogo Island, are able to access that service without interference."
