Minister Bettney responds to Change Islands request

Julie Bettney, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation announced today that the department will address the emergency response issue for Change Islands. As a result of the meeting between residents, area MHA, Gerry Reid and department officials on Saturday, January 18, 1997 in Gander, it was agreed that the department would revisit this main area of concern.

"After reviewing the proposal received from Change Islands, we have confirmed with the residents that two of their original requests can be accommodated," says Bettney. "Savings have been identified in the overall ferry service that make these changes possible. The Hamiltion Sound will remain docked overnight at Change Islands until March 31, 1997 to respond to emergencies on the island. In addition we have implemented last year's Winter schedule, providing an extra hour at the end of the day."

The Minister confirms that a two boat regular service will not be continued for the Winter months. "We are not in a financial position to dedicate the Hamiltion Sound year round to operate between Change Islands and the mainland, nor do traffic volumes warrant it during the Winter months," says Bettney.

Bettney says her officials are prepared to continue working with residents of Change Islands and Fogo Island to find efficiencies that will address their service requirements.
