The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

As part of the Newfoundland Soccer Association's commitment to allowing players to achieve to the highest levels of the game, the association is introducing the concept of Regional Training Centres. The whole concept is based around bringing the best players and coaches in the region together in order to provide a training environment which will challenge athletes every time they train.

"We are starting to produce players who have the ability to play at American universities and in order to give them the best possible training, they have to train with the best possible players," says Andy Cameron, Technical Director for the NSA. "In the last month I have inquires from two American universities which are trying to attract some of our players."

In order to assist these players and other elite players in the region, the NSA will start their winter program at the Regional Training Centre in St. John's beginning on Sunday, November 30. The St. John's RTC is expected to be a model for other training centres across the province and the program will run training for girls and boys in the U15 age group and the U18 age group. The U15 age group will be based out of MacDonald Drive School and the U18 age group will be based out of the Provincial Training Centre in Torbay. Both programs will be run by provincial staff coaches, as well as, up and coming coaches in the region. The content of the instruction will be based on established training priorities for each age group in order to provide a logical and sequential method of training.

It should also be noted that players who register for the program must meet minimum standards in order to stay with the program. This is considered a must in order to provide the challenging environment which is needed to develop elite players. The cost of the winter program is $125 and anyone needing more information can call the Newfoundland Soccer Association (709) 576-0601.
