Provincial High School Soccer this weekend

The High School Athletic Federation will kick off its schedule of provincial championships this coming weekend. Champions will be declared in four soccer and four slo-pitch tournaments throughout the province.

Mobile High School will host the Boys 3A Soccer. Six teams will compete in the two division event featuring Mobile, Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Baie Verte High in Division A and Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Vaters Collegiate (St. John's) and Leo Burke Academy (Bishop Falls) in division B. Start time for the tournament is 4 p.m. Thursday with the championship game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Bay Bulls.

Seven teams will compete in Stephenville in the Boys 4A championship. Division A will see action from the host - St. Stephens, St. Francis (Harbour Grace) and Marystown Central High. Competing in Division B will be Holy Spirit (Manuels), O'Donel High (Mount Pearl), St. Mike's High (Grand Falls) and Gander Collegiate Tournament play begins Thursday at 4:30 and wraps up with the championship game 1 p.m. Saturday. Games will be played at both St. Stephen's and Stephenville Integrated fields.

In girls action, four teams will be vying for the provincial title in the 3A division. The round robin format will feature the host St. Lawrence Central High, Baie Verte High, Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Mobile Central High. Games will be played Friday starting at 9 a.m. and culminate with the top two teams in the championship game at 3 p.m. All games will be played at Centennial Field in St. Lawrence.

Bishops College in St. John's is the host school for the Girls 4A tournament which will have six teams, competing for the provincial banner. The Red Division will have Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), Marystown Central High and the host competing for two playoff spots, while the White Division will see action from O'Donel High (Mount Pearl), St. Stephens (Stephenville) and Pearce Regional High. The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday morning followed by round robin games. The semi-finals are set for Saturday followed by the championship at 2 p.m. Three venues will be used for this tournament - MUN and Fieldian Grounds and the Provincial Recreation Center.

All tournaments are sponsored by the School Milk Foundation and Keyin Technical College. Championship banners, gold and silver medals and Keyin Sportsmanship Awards will be presented at each tournament.
