The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador held a very successful annual general meeting this past weekend. On Friday night a panel discussion on sexual abuse and sport which was mediated by St. John's lawyer John McGrath was well attended and very informative.

On Saturday a restructuring workshop headed by Dave Feener, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, took place with full participation from the sport delegates.

The Annual Volunteer of the Year and scholarship luncheon took place from 12:30 - 2 p.m. with several awards given out. Mount Pearl Figure Skating Club president, Joy Budden received the Frank Graham Memorial Award as Volunteer of the Year, as well as eastern region Volunteer of the Year. Other regional volunteer winners were Barbara Cribb (southern) of the Crystal Figure Skating Club in Marystown, David Grimes (central) of Grand Falls-Windsor, who is involved in softball and minor hockey, and Aiden White (western), president of the Stephenville Judo Club.

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador also handed out 12, $500 scholarships to post-secondary student athletes. Recipients were:

    Floyd Davis, St. John's (volleyball)
    Stephen Fagan, St. John's (wrestling)
    Ryan Michalski, St. John's (basketball)
    Kelly Lynn Saunders, Mount Pearl (rowing)
    Tayna Taylor, Mount Pearl (swimming)
    Jonathan Dale, St. John's (squash)
    Raeleen Dunne, Mount Pearl (soccer)
    Bill Hogan, St. John's (swimming)
    Ann Murrin, Shoe Cove (basketball)
    Anne Stapleton, Mount Pearl (soccer)
    Jamie Tobin, Cape Broyle (hockey/softball)

The election of officers took place in the afternoon with several new people being elected to the board. The board of directors for 1997/98 are:

    Angela King of St. John's, (second vice-president)
    Dave Brenton of Marystown, (treasurer)
    Rosalind Pound of St. John's, (secretary)

    Jean Trend of Grand Falls-Windsor, (central director)
    Todd Mercer of Corner Brook, (western director)
    Ken Anthony of Labrador, (northern director)

The 1997/98 year marks Sport Newfoundland and Labrador's 25th anniversary.
