The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Fourteen athletes from across the province represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the Atlantic Junior/Juvenile/Under-14 Badminton Championships in Sackville, Nova Scotia March 7-9. Newfoundland players made it to the semi-finals in every age category.

Beenu Wadhwa (St. John's) won gold in juvenile (under 16) boys singles by defeating Ghislain Ward (N.B.) 15-10, 15-11. Chad Decker (Robert's Arm) joined him in juvenile boys doubles to win gold by defeating Luc Roy and Ghislain Ward (N.B.) 14-17, 15-11, 15-3.

Sonu Wadhwa (St. John's) and Joey Scott (N.S.) won gold in junior (under-19) boy's doubles. They defeated Chris Hobbs and Josh McGarvey in the finals 17-16, 15-7.

Claudi Bags (Milltown) captured a silver medal in junior girls singles. She was defeated by Jennifer Le (PEI) in the finals 11-7, 11-3.

The Newfoundland players at the Atlantic Juniors were: Sonu Wadhwa, Beenu Wadhwa and Vishal Kaushik (St. John's); Mike Price, Darryl Foss, Heidi Eason and Collette Leonard (CBS); Nadine Newman, Nori Bradly, Claudia Baggs, Shane Villeneuve and Kristen Powell (Central); Jamie Payne (Cow Head) and Chad Decker (Robert's Arm).

They were coached by Mike Alexander (provincial badminton coach) and Trevor Rowsell (assisting coach).
