The Newfoundland Soccer Association, as a member of the Atlantic Provinces Soccer Council has recently committed to sending players to the Atlantic U15 Boy's and Girl's Provincial All Star Competition. This competition will take place on July 12 and 13, in Charlottetown, PEI where the best U15 players from each of the Atlantic Provinces will compete against each other for Newfoundland. It has been several years since the province has taken part in this particular event.

As for the decision to get back into the competition, NSA president, Angus Barrett feels: "It is important to expose players and coaches to the next level in order for them to develop. The Atlantic Competition will provide this opportunity for our best U15s, and the coaching staff."

One of the highlights of the boy's competition will see a Team Atlantic picked which will go on to Montreal for the National All Star Competition the following weekend. Members of this team will be exposed to the best players in the country of their age group and they will also be scouted by Canada's National Youth Team Coach, Tony Taylor. Unfortunately, there is no national competition on the girl's side this year. Plans are presently been made to have a similar competition for the girls in 1998.

Newfoundland's provincial team coach has also been given the responsibility of coaching the Atlantic Team. "The association sees this as a wonderful coaching development opportunity and we will be looking for interested candidates in the very near future", said Mr. Barrett. Any coach fully certified at Level III NCCP may apply for the head coach position. The assistant coach and manager positions will be open to Level III technical candidates. Anyone requiring more information may contact the NSA office.

Players who are interest in trying out for the provincial team should contact their local club as some have already started to prepare their players for the tryouts. Actual dates for the provincial team tryouts have not been finalized but will be announced in the near future.
