Pepsi Junior Men's Provincial Volleyball Championship

On March 7 and 8 the town of Avondale will be hosting the Pepsi Provincial Junior Men's Volleyball Championship. Games will be played at Roncalli High School. The tournament will see four teams compete in a double round robin format. The top team after round robin play will earn a bye to the final, with the second and third place teams meeting in a semi-final match. Action will get under way on Friday at 4 p.m. and will continue on Saturday at 9 a.m. The playoffs will start at approximately 3 p.m. with the gold medal match around 4 p.m. The winner of this tournament will earn the right to compete in the national junior championships in Alberta in April.

The teams that will be competing include the home team Roncalli Cardinals. CBN Knights will have a strong team featuring several players from the Memorial University varsity team as well as other players with much provincial championship experience. The Salt Water Hens will be competing. This is a team made up from the provincial high school 3A champs Port Rexon and 2A champs Little Hearts Ease. Rounding out the tournament will be the Canada Games team. This team is made up of many of the best high school and first year university players that our province has to offer. This team will be representing Newfoundland in the 1997 Canada Games being held in Brandon, Manitoba in August. This tournament will no doubt be the site for some very exciting volleyball.
