Intra Travel Eastern Open Volleyball Tournament

On February 28 and March 1 the Intra Travel Eastern Open Volleyball tournament will be held in St. John's. There will be both a mens and womens tournament, with the men playing at Booth Memorial High School and Cabot College, and the women will play at Marine Institute on Friday night and at the Torbay Recreation Centre on Saturday. With six teams in the womens division they will play a round robin format with the top team advancing to the finals and the second and third place teams will play in a semi-final match. There will be 10 teams on the mens side which will be divided up into two divisions with the top two teams in each division moving on to the semi-finals. The tournament will get under way at 5:30 p.m on Friday, February 28 at all venues and will resume on Saturday, March 1 at 9 a.m. All playoffs are scheduled to start at approximately 2 p.m. at the Torbay Recreation Centre for the women and the mens playoffs will take place at Booth Memorial High School.

This tournament will include many of the top volleyball teams in Newfoundland on both the mens and womens sides. On the mens side some of the teams competing are the Guards who are the provincial Senior A champs for the past three years and feature players such as Deon Goulding who has been named AUAA MVP twice and has tried out for Canada's national team; and Rex Hillier, a two-time all-star at the Eastern Canadian Championships, and many other players with university and national championship experience.

Pasadena had won the Western and Central Opens and they will be trying to complete the hat trick when they come to St. John's. They competed in the Eastern Canadian Championships last year.

Don Cherry's will have many experienced players. They are currently among the top teams in the St. John's Senior Men's league. Benders will definitely be a contender as they are made up mainly of past and present MUN players. Another team that will be competing will be the Canada Games team. This team will be representing our province at the upcoming Canada Games in Brandon, Manitoba. The team is made up of first year university players and high school students who have dominated at the high school level of the sport. ONCA will also be playing. Right now they are in second place in the St. John's league. Other teams include Marine Institute, Cabot College, ONCA Old Thyme, and Conne River.

Teams competing in the ladies tournament include the Canada Games team. This team will also be competing in Brandon this summer. They are defending Senior A Ladies champions as well as winners of the Central Open. Benders will be there featuring Karen Murphy who is the women's varsity coach at MUN, and Jennifer Earle, a standout for MUN over the past couple of years. Benders were in first place in the St. John's womens league as of February 16. Jungle Jims will competing. As of February 16 they were in third place in the city league only two points behind the leading Benders. Turkey Joe's will be featuring ex-national team member Kathy Noseworthy. Other teams competing in the womens tournament include Gander, YQX and Pico White Evans Strikers.

This tournament will definitely be very exciting as teams are using this tournament as a warm-up for the up-coming Provincial Senior Championships to be held in Gander, March 14-15.
