Reg Soper Memorial Award
This is awarded to the
individual who proves their dedication and work in
volleyball over the year. The winner for 1996-97 is Terry
Mosher. Terry is the head coach for the Female Canada
Games team who haved had a busy training and competition
schedule throughout the province and country. Terry also
coached the Queen Elizabeth Senior High School Team who
won their zone, finished second in regionals and placed
sixth in the 4A provincial championships. As head coach
and co-organizer of the Sabres Volleyball Club in
Conception Bay South. Terry still manages to officiate
and has finished his Volleyball Level III Coaching final
evaluation.
Coach of the Year
The Coach of the Year for 1996-97 is George Buckle
from Presentation Junior High and the Humber Valley
Volleyball Club. George had a very successful year.
During the year he coached his junior high team who won
six of the seven tournaments they played in with their
greatest victory being a first place finish at the DAL
Classie in Halifax. He coached they Humber Valley Midget
A Team who won a gold medal at the provincial
championships and finished fifth in the Eastern Canadian
Championships, the Juvenile team who won their
provincials and the Junior team that finished second in
the Junior Provincials.
Wayne Sheppard Memorial Award
This award is presented to a senior male and a senior
female player of the year. This years winner in the male
category is Paul Melanson of St. John's. Paul played with
MUN in the AUAA League, played with the Guards who won
the St. John's Senior City league and the Provincial
Senior A Championships. Paul was awarded MVP of the
Senior A Championships in Gander and has accepted an
assistant coaching position with MUN for 1997-98. The
female category this year drew a tie in the votes between
Cheryl Oldford and Susan Mosher both from Conception Bay
South. Cheryl and Susan both played for three teams
during the 1996-97 volleyball season. Cheryl was the
starting setter of the Memorial Seahawks in which she was
named team MVP for the season. She is also the starting
setter of the 1997 Canada Games team as well as the CBS
Sabres Junior Leadies Team in which Cheryl was selected
to the All-Star team for the junior tournament. Susan
Mosher was selected as the Memorial's nomination for
AUAA's 1997 Rookie of the Year as she led the Seahawks
team in kills with 150. She also had seven aces, 100
digs, and 34 blocks in her rookie year. She is the
starting power hitter for the Canada Games Team who won
the Senior A Provincials where Susan was awarded MVP of
the tournament. Susan was also the starting power hitter
for the CBS Sabres Junior team who placed first in the
provincial championships. Both Cheryl and Susan will be
returning to play with Memorial in September.
Robbie West Memorial Award
This award is presented to a junior male and junior
female player of the year. This years winner in the male
category is Tommy Kelly from Conception Bay North, Tommy
played with the Roncalli Senior Boys team and the CBN
Knights Midget volleyball team who finished first in
Midget A Provincial, fourth in the Eastern Canadian
Midget and third in the Volleyfest. Tommy was awarded an
all-star at both the Midget A Provincial and Eastern
Canadian Championships in Ontario. Tommy is also a member
of the provincial Midget Elite Team who will compete in
the Eastern Canadian Championships in July. The junior
female winner this year is Susan Penney from Discovery
Collegiate Volleyball Club. Susan is team captain of her
high school team who finished second at the Juvenile
Provincial Championships in which Susan received an
All-Star Award and attended the National Juvenile
Championships in New Brunswick. The team also finished
third in the Junior Provincials where Susan received an
All-Star Award and she participated in a number of
tournaments both provincially and nationally with the
1997 Canada Games Team.
Community Development Award
The CBS Sabres Volleyball Club is the winner of this
award for the coummunity who significantly contributes to
the development of the sport of volleyball in their
community. CBS entered eight teams in volleyfest, ran
invitational kickoff tournaments for various age groups,
entered 21 teams in provincial championships and held
skill development clincis for Grades 5 - 7 that involved
125 children and 14 volunteer coaches. There is currently
one sand court in the developmental stage and are
lobbying to construct a second.
Team of the Year
The Knights of Conception Bay North are this years
team of the year. They won the Midget A Provincials and
placed fourth in the Eastern Canadian Championships. They
also competed in two Senior Mens Invitational tournaments
in which they finished second and third.
Paul Augot Memorial Award
This award is presented to the official whose
dedication to officiating should be recognized. Renne
Cashin co-ordindated all the officials for provincial
events in Central Newfoundland this year while also being
active as a Certified Provincial Referee.
