Newfoundland takes home seven medals from two Atlantic
Badminton Championships in 1996/97

In 1997 Atlantic Badminton Championships were held in Shediac, New Brunswick on March 21-23 and attracted more than 70 of the best badminton players in Atlantic Canada. Jasmine Wadhwa, Sean Ellis and Anand Irrinki, all from St. John's, represented Newfoundland. Wadhwa captured two silver medals (Ladies Singles and Mixed Doubles) and a gold (Ladies Doubles). Ellis made it to the semi-finals in Mens' Singles, and Irrinki and Ellis made it the quarter-finals in Mens' Doubles.

Fourteen athletes from across the province represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the Atlantic Junior/Juvenile/Under-14 Badminton Championships in Sackville, New Brunswick, March 7-9, 1997. Beenu Wadhwa (St. John's) won gold in Juvenile (Under-16) Boys' Singles by defeating Ghislain Ward (New Brunswick) 15-10, 15-11. Chad Decker (Robert's Arm) joined him in Juvenile Boys' Doubles to win gold by defeating Luc Roy and Ghislain Ward (New Brunswick) 14-17, 15-11, 15-3. Vishal Kaushik (St. John's) won the Juvenile Boys' Singles Consolation Round. Sonu Wadhwa (St. John's) and Joey Scott (Nova Scotia) won gold in Junior (Under-19) Boys' Doubles. They defeated Chris Hobbs and Josh McGarvey in the finals 17-16, 15-7. Claudia Baggs (Milltown) captured a silver medal in Junior Girls Singles. She was defeated by Jennifer Le (Prince Edward Island) in the finals 11-7, 11-3.
