The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

High School Boy's Hoop Champions to be declared

Forty-one high school boys basketball teams will take to the courts this coming weekend to compete for top honours in four provincial boys basketball tournaments.

Xavier High in Long Harbour is the host for the Boys A tournament. Ten schools will be vying for top honours in this event. Division A will see action from the following teams: Our Savoir King (Southern Harbour), St. Joseph's (Bay de Verde), St. Bernard's All Grade, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), and E.A. Butler (McKays). In division B, Xavier High, A.R. Scammell (Change Islands), Holy Cross (St. Alban's), Hampden Academy, John Watkins Academy ( Hermitage). Venues at Xavier High and Norman's Cove will be used, with games beginning 7 p.m., Wednesday. The top two teams advance to the cross overs on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.

The 2A tournament is being hosted by Glovertown Regional High. Twelve teams have qualified through zone and regional play-downs. The tournament will be played in a four division format. Division A consists of Glovertown Regional High, Deer Lake Pentecostal, and Roncalli High (Port Saunders). Competing in Division B will be Fatima Academy (St. Bride's), St. Lawrence Central High, and Our Lady Queen of Peace (Happy Valley-Goose Bay). Division C will have action between Riverwood Academy (Gander Bay), St. Michael's All Grade (Arnold's Cove), and Stephenville Intergrated. Rounding out the field in Division D will be King Academy (Harbour Breton), St. John Bosco (St. John's) and Whitbourne Central High. Play gets under way at both Glovertown and Eastport gyms Thursday evening at 5 o'clock. The top two teams of each division after the round robin play will advance to the quarter-finals Saturday morning. The semifinals are scheduled for 1 p.m. followed by the championship game.

St. Catherine's Academy on Salmonier Line is the host school for the 3A boys championships. Both St. Catherine's and near by Roncalli Central High in Avondale will be the site for the tournament where 10 teams will be competing in the two division event. In the Red Division - St. James Regional High (Port aux Basques), Lewisporte Regional High, St. Catherine's Academy, St. Kevin's (Goulds), and Musgravetown Central High. Competing in the Blue Division will be St. Francis Central High (Harbour Grace), Labrador City Collegiate, Pasadena Academy, St. Michael's High (Grand Falls-Windsor), and Mobile Central High. Games get under way Wednesday at 4 p.m. and round robin play continues through Thursday and Friday. The playoffs are scheduled for 10 a.m. and noon Saturday with the championship game set to go at 2:30 p.m.

The 4A tournament is being co-hosted by Brother Rice High and Holy Heart of Mary Schools in St. John's. Twelve teams have qualified for the tournament and will compete in a four division set up. Division A will see action from Brother Rice, Clarenville Integrated and Grand Falls Academy. In Division B, Stella Maris (Trepassey), Beaconsfield (St. John's), and Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista) will face off. Vying for top spot in Division C will be Regina High (Corner Brook), Holy Heart and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), while rounding out the field in Division D will be Elwood Regional High (Deer Lake), Pearce Regional High (Burin) and Gander Collegiate.

Games get under way 10 a.m. Thursday at both Holy Heart and Brother Rice schools, with round robin action continuing through Friday morning. Quarter-finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday. Semi-finals are 11 a.m. Saturday and the championship game 7 p.m. Saturday at Brother Rice gym.

Keyin Technical College and School Milk Foundation, as sponsors of the federation, are also sponsors of four of the tournaments. Keyin will provide the Keyin Sportsmanship Awards while Milk will sponsor the "Free Throw for Milk" competition.
