The following is being distributed at the Newfoundland and Labrador Parks/Recreation Association:

Nomination for Recreation Awards

The deadline for nomination for the various categories that comprise the annual awards program of the Newfoundland and Labrador Parks/Recreation Association has been extended to April 30.

Bishop's Falls Ron Healey, who chairs the awards committee, explains that: "because the annual meeting and conference of the Canadian Parks/Recreation Association is being held in St. John's, our annual meeting has been extended to coincide with this national event".

"The announcement of the various provincial winners is made during our meeting and those announcements will of necessity be much later this year. For that reason we have set the provincial deadline for nominations back 30 days".

Instituted in 1982, there are actually six awards to be decided. Five are for contributions to the community.

The other is the Ebert J. Broomfield Memorial Scholarship which goes to a student attending a post secondary educational institution.

The Cy Hoskins Memorial Award is for a full time recreational practitioner while the Pitcher Plant Award goes to both an individual and a community for outstanding recreation and leisure services.

Those who have worked to provide recreation for the disabled should be nominated for the Bridging the Gap Award while the Fitness Leadership Award is for those involved in fitness development.

Gary Milley at (709) 729-3892 will provide applications and other information.
