The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

The Signals team from the St. John's Figure Skating Club, coached by Rena Noseworthy, skated to a bronze medal in the Novice Challenge Cup at the Canadian Precision Skating Championships held in Halifax this past weekend.

This was the best finish for Newfoundland in this nine team event as the Icicles from Conception Bay North got sixth spot and the Silver Sensations from Corner Brook took seventh place. The Signals finished ahead of teams entered from Northern Ontario, Saskatchewan, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. B.C. and Eastern Ontario took the gold and silver.

Friction on Ice from St. John's FSC was the top finisher for Newfoundland in the Junior event as they took sixth spot out of 13 teams finishing ahead of Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

The Junior Starlites from Mount Pearl FSC ended in ninth position and the Ice Crystals from CBN took 11th place.

Teams from Eastern and Northern Ontario also skated in the Junior category. Gold, silver and bronze medals went to Eastern Ontario, British Columbia, and Northern Ontario.

Over 1,200 athletes, making up approximately 70 teams in the novice, junior, senior and adult categories took part in the championship.

The next Canadian Precision Skating Championship will be held in Ottawa, Ontario in March 1998.
