The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Senior Volleyball Championship

March 14 and 15 will see the town of Gander and surrounding area come alive with volleyball action. Fifty-two teams will make the trip to play in the Beresford Ltd./Molson Provincial Senior Volleyball Championships. Ten different gyms will be used in all in the Gander/Gander Bay Loop area to host this tournament. There will be six categories at the tournament with A,B and C divisions on both the mens and womens sides. This year will be especially exciting as the top three teams in the A division for men and women will earn the right to compete in the Eastern Canadian Senior Championships which will be held in St. John's on May 2-4. Every team in this tournament will be trying very hard to win their respective championship so this will definitely be the site of some exciting volleyball.

The Mens A division will take place at Gill Memorial in Musgrave Harbour and at the Canadian Forces Base in Gander. The teams that will be competing include the Guards, who are the Provincial Senior A champs for the past three years and feature such players as Deon Goulding who has been named AUAA MVP twice and has tried out for Canada's national team, and Rex Hiller, a two-time all-star at the Eastern Canadian Championships, and many other players with university and national championship experience.

Benders will no doubt be a contender as they won the recently held Eastern Open. They are made up of mainly past and present MUN players. Pasadena will be there. They won both the Western and Central Opens this year, as well they competed in the Eastern Canadian Championships last year. Don Cherry's will feature many experienced players. This team finished among the top teams in the St. John's Senior Mens league. Another team that will be competing will be the Canada Games team. This team will be representing our province at the upcoming Canada Games in Brandon, Manitoba in August. This team is made up of first year university players and high school students who have dominated at the high school level of the sport. ONCA who finished in second place in the St. John's Senior Mens league will also be there. Other teams in the Mens A division include Marine Institute and Conne River.

The Womens A division will take place at Riverwood Academy in Wings Point and at Gander Collegiate. Teams competing for the womens A title include the Canada Games training squad. They are defending Senior A Ladies champions as well as winners of the Central Open. Turkey Joe's who are winners of the Eastern Open featuring ex-national team member Kathy Noseworthy. Benders will be there featuring Karen Murphy who is the Womens varsity coach at Memorial University, and Jennifer Earle, a stand-out for MUN over the past couple of years. This team was in first place in the St. John's womens league as of February 16. Jungle Jim's who were in third in the womens league only two points behind the leaders as of February 16. Other teams competing in the Womens A division include SMACK, Academy Canada, Don Cherry's, Pepsi and Governor's Pub.

The Mens B division will be played at Bayview Academy in Gambo and at Gander Collegiate. Teams competing for the Mens B title include Gander, Harbour Breton, Summit Lounge, the Smugglers, Cabot College, Biarritz, Loopers, ONCA Old Thyme, Dooly's and Zapata's.

The Womens B division will play at Glovertown and at St. Paul's School in Gander. Teams competing in this division include Gander YQX, Greensleeves 1, West Viking Molson Stephenville, Labatts, Strikers, Beothuk Club, Blue Star Bitters, SAMKYLE, Jacob's, Jungle Jim's, and Play it Again Sports.

The Mens C division will be played at Glenwood only. Teams in this division include Shanco, St. Pierre Abeilles, Deer Lake, CBS Pioneers, and St. Pierre Amis D'al.

The Womens C division will play at Carmanville and at Gander Junior High. Teams in this division include Cabot College, St. Pierre Sagittarius, Misfits, St. Pierre Scorpions, O'Reilly's Pub, Kracker Jax, St. Pierre Rescapees, Deer Lake, and Cabot Crewe.

All divisions will start from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 14 and will resume between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 15. The volleyball played at these championships will definitely be very exciting for anyone involved.
