February 6, 1997 (Tourism, Culture and Recreation) The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador: Nominations announced for Sports Awards Frances Wiseman, chair of the Awards Program, would like to announce the names of all nominees for the 1996 Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Annual Awards Program. A record total of 83 nominations were received from provincial sport governing bodies, Newfoundland sports media, and by the general public. Thirty-three nominations were for Junior Male/Female Athlete of the Year; 25 nominations were for Senior Male/Female Athlete of the Year; nine for Coach of the Year; seven for Executive of the Year; and nine nominations for Team of the Year. "The substantial increase in nominations over the preceding years indicates the considerable support throughout the province for the Annual Awards Program provided by Sports Newfoundland and Labrador" comments Wiseman. Wiseman points out that "although there is only one winner in each category, it is a honour for each person to be nominated in recognition of his or her outstanding performance in 1996." "We would like to sincerely thank the sponsors Labatt Brewery as the major sponsor, along with associate sponsors Brookfield Dairy Group, Investors Group, 3M, Air Atlantic, and Delta Convention Centre, for their continued support of the awards program, and emphasize that this financial support is indeed appreciated" says Wiseman. The presentation of these provincial awards will take place at the awards banquet to be held March 15, at the Delta Convention Centre in St. John's.
