Newfoundland gold at Halifax badminton tournament

Jasmine Wadhwa of St. John's and partner Lee Thibideau of PEI won gold in mixed doubles at the Longard Halifax City and District Badminton Championship held this past Saturday at the Stadacona Base gym.

Wadhwa, who was competing with a bad case of the flu, sat out the women's singles competition, and made it to the semi-finals in women's doubles with partner Kim O'Hara of New Brunswick.

Other players representing Newfoundland and Labrador at the LHC&D Badminton Championship were Nori Bradley (Eastpot), Lisa Hounsell (Glovertown), Anand Irrinki (Gander), Jamie Payne (Cox's Cove) and Sonu Wadhwa (St. John's).

In men's singles Sonu Wadhwa made it to the 32 round, while Jamie Payne reached the semi-finals in the men's singles consolation round. Nori Bradley reached quarter-finals in women's singles, and Lisa Hounsell made it to the semi-finals in the women's singles consolation round. Bradley and Hounsell teamed up to make it to the semi-finals in the women's doubles consolation round.

Anand Irrinki and partner E. Fashoway of New Brunswick reached the quarter-finals in men's doubles, and Jamie Payne and Sonu Wadhwa teamed up to reach the quarter-finals in the men's doubles consolation round.

In mixed doubles, along with Jasmine Wadhwa's gold, Hounsell and Payne, and Irrinki and O'Hara made it to the 16 round, and Bradley and S. Wadhwa reached the semi-finals of the mixed doubles consolation round.
