Five Hundred More Youth Congress Final Report Released

"The final report of the Cabot 500, Five Hundred More Youth Congress has been released today and is posted on the Cabot 500 web site for public review and discussion," said event manager Sonya Abbott.

The Five Hundred More Youth Congress was the final anchor event of the Cabot 500 Celebrations. The six day congress at Killdevil Camp in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, was held November 9 - 15, 1997, and gathered together 165 youth, between the ages of 14 - 18 years, from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and the world. The topics discussed included environment sustainable development, the economy and youth employment.

The report contains two major statements from these youth. The congress vision statement outlines their hopes for an improved future and reflects their determination to achieve their goals. Included also are resolutions that present the youth stand on current local, national, and global issues. There was a strong call to action on all levels and a clear mandate given for follow-up discussions with the Internet as a primary medium. The youth hope for another congress in two years to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of Confederation.

The final report can be viewed on the World Wide Web at //www.cabot500.nf.ca
