The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Island boys A and 3A volleyball tournaments

The High School Athletic Federation kicks off another series of provincial championships this coming weekend. Highlighted will be the first two of 10 provincial volleyball tournaments.

The boys A and 3A island volleyball championships are being held in Cape St. George and Carmanville. The provincial boys A and 3A championships will take place December 12-13 in North West River and Goose Bay. For financial reasons, any time a Labrador school is awarded a provincial tournament to host, an island tournament is held with only the island winner earning the right to advance to the provincial.

The Boys A tournament will be hosted by Our Lady of the Cape High in Cape St. George. Eight teams will be competing in two divisions. Division A will see the host against Lumsden School Complex, St. Joseph's (Bay de Verde) and Random Island Intergraded. Division B will see Ecole St. Anne (La Grand Terre), Victoria All Grade (Gaultois), Sops Arm Central High and H.G. Fillier (Englee).

The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 10:45 a.m. followed by round robin games in both divisions. The top teams will advance to the semi-finals to be played Saturday morning followed by the championship game.

Carmanville School Complex is the host school for the five team boys 3A tsland tournament. The first match of the tournament is scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday. Teams vying for the right to travel to Labrador for the provincial final include: Carmanville School, Bishop O'Neill Collegiate (Brigus), Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Baie Verte High School and King Academy (Harbour Breton). Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 1:20 on Friday afternoon with play beginning at 2 p.m. Semi-finals will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday followed by the championship game.

All tournaments are sponsored by the Newfoundland and Labrador School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Keyin Technical College. Zap the School Milk Foundation Mascot will be making an appearance at the boys 3A tournament in Carmanville. Championship banners, gold and silver medals and Keyin Sportsmanship Awards will be presented at each tournament.
