Backgrounder

Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL), the provincial Tourism Industry Association, represents businesses, associations and individuals involved both directly and indirectly in the tourism industry. An essential aspect of HNL's mandate is to develop the human resources component of the tourism industry in order to facilitate the development of a high quality and professional provincial tourism industry.

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council serves as a national forum to facilitate human resource development which will support a globally competitive and sustainable Canadian Tourism Industry.

In cooperation with the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council and Canada's 11 other Tourism Education Councils/Tourism Industry Associations, Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador has developed a wide variety of projects and programs which enhance human resource development in the province's tourism industry.

Some of the projects and programs to be highlighted at the Product Launch:

SuperHost Atlantic: An internationally recognized Customer Service/Tourism Awareness Training Program which consists of a seven-hour interactive workshop focussing on enhancing communication and customer service skills.

National Tourism Career Awareness Program - Tourism...You Decide How Far To Go:

A presentation program delivered by tourism industry professionals that introduces individuals to Newfoundland and Labrador's and Canada's tourism industries. This national program explores career and entrepreneurial opportunities in tourism and suggests training and education programs to facilitate entry into the industry.

Tourism Careers for Youth (TCY): A national program to assist young people with the transition from school to work. TCY offers a mix of classroom education and on-the-job training in tourism and prepares individuals to work in a variety of tourism-related occupations.

National Occupational Standards: Statements set by the industry that describe the knowledge, skills, and attitude required of an individual to be considered competent in an occupation. Occupational Standards are used by employers to hire, train and evaluate employees, by educators to develop training materials and programs and by the tourism industry to develop certification.

Professional Certification: National recognition of individuals who meet or exceed the industry Occupational Standards. The certification process consists of a written exam, a self-directed performance review, and an industry evaluation. The individual must be working in a particular occupation in order to be certified in that occupation. Professional certification is recognized in all provinces and territories in Canada.
