Interview Opportunity

As a key participant in 'The Summit of the Sea' core conference in St. John's, Newfoundland (September 1-6, 1997), Dr. Arthur Hanson of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE), will participate in a panel response and discussion on international Maritime law and protection of the ocean. Following the panel discussion Dr. Hanson will be available for interviews.

Dr. Hanson is the President and CEO of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), located in Winnipeg. In addition, he chairs the NRTEE's Task Force on Ocean Environment and Resources, which is releasing Sustainable Strategies for Oceans: a Co-Management Guide in the Fall. This upcoming publication proposes innovative strategies for managing what have traditionally been conflicting environmental and economic interests in protecting our ocean ecosystem and resources.

The National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy (NRTEE) is an independent agency of the federal government. Its main goal is to provide objective views and information regarding the state of the debate on the relationship between the environment and the economy. The NRTEE is comprised of a Chair and up to 24 members who are appointed by the Prime Minister from a variety of regions and sectors of Canadian society including business, labour, academia, environmental organizations and First Nations.
