19th Canadian Waste Management Conference

The Newfoundland Environmental Industry Association is pleased to announce that the 19th Canadian Waste Management Conference (CWMC), Canada's premier waste management conference, will take place this year in St. John's, Newfoundland, from September 15 to 18, 1997. The theme of the 19th CWMC is The Changing World of Waste Management: Taking Stock from Sea to Sea. The Conference has an accompanying exhibition.

As the principal forum for exchange of social, economic and technical views on waste issues, the goal of the Canadian Waste Management Conference is to present leading-edge and credible research results, policy directions and project successes, to waste management professionals. In particular, this 19th CWMC will include presentations on Canadian industry and government progress in meeting Canada's national objective of 50 per cent solid waste reduction by the year 2000.

If there is one thing that we can all agree to it is that real estate is a valuable and finite commodity. We can not create more land. However, we can clean up the lands that have been used for industrial, military or other such purposes. There are several reasons for the clean-up of contaminated lands ranging from health concerns and aesthetics to the need to rehabilitate or regenerate for reuse. Hundreds of millions of dollars are being invested in Canada in order to solve this pollution problem.

The Regeneration of Lands is one of the major themes of the Canadian Waste Management Conference. Sessions outlining various technical approaches and experiences will be explored. Technologies such as wet oxidation, the use of microbes and bioremediation, soil washing, and bio-thermal treatment will be discussed. Management issues and experimental treatments will also be presented by leaders in the field.

Session topics range from pollution prevention to regeneration of lands and landfill issues. In keeping with Newfoundland's concurrent Cabot 500 Anniversary "Summit of the Sea", two sessions will focus on northern and coastal waste management issues. At least ten presenters will discuss Newfoundland projects or policy direction. Paper topics include the remediation projects at Argentia, fish waste disposal, bioremediation techniques, product stewardship, environmental management systems, biomedical waste, and information management.

The CWMC is run as a partnership between Environment Canada and Canadian Environment Industry Association and its affiliates (in this case NEIA) and is held in a different province each year.
