Some Provincial Parks Set to Close for Season

Sandra Kelly, Minister, Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that four of the province's 15 provincial parks which offer camping facilities will close for the 1997 season on Tuesday, September 2. The province's Natural and Scenic Attraction Provincial Parks will also close on that date.

The camping parks scheduled to close on September 2 include: Sir Richard Squires Memorial, Blow Me Down, Pinware River, and Duley Lake.

"Ten camping parks will remain open until Monday, September 29," Ms. Kelly said. These parks include: Butter Pot, La Manche, Lockston Path, Frenchman's Cove, Notre Dame, Dildo Run, Pistolet Bay, J. T. Cheeseman, Barachois Pond, and Sandbanks. The remaining park, Chance Cove, will stay open until Monday, October 6. Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve will remain open to visitors until Sunday, October 5.

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation wishes to advise all park users that, in an effort to ensure a safe and enjoyable camping experience, certain regulations will be enforced during the Labour Day weekend period, August 27 - September 2. Violation of the following regulations will result in immediate eviction from the park and/or the possibility of charges being laid:

  • only one piece of camping equipment is permitted per campsite;

  • excluding family situations, a maximum of four persons are permitted per campsite;

  • persons must be 19 years of age or older to register for a campsite;

  • visitors are not permitted to enter the campground area after 9:00 p.m.;

  • visitors to the campground must register at the checkpoint or park office;

  • campsites must be kept clean and tidy; if sites are left dirty and littered, the person to whom the site is registered will be charged;

  • consumption of alcoholic beverages is restricted to designated campsites or picnic sites;

  • quiet time is from 10:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m.; and

  • the cutting of trees and bushes is not permitted.

"I compliment park staff for providing park users with courteous service and clean faciliities during the summer camping season," Ms. Kelly said. "I would also like to remind all park users to do their part to protect the environment by cleaning up their camp or picnic site before leaving the park."
