Torbay athlete to carry Canada Summer Games flag

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture Recreation, announced today that swimmer Suzanne Drodge will carry the province's flag at the opening ceremonies at the 1997 Canada Summer Games in Brandon, Manitoba. "Carrying the province's flag is a tremendous honour and Suzanne certainly is a worthy representation of Team Newfoundland and Labrador," the minister said. Suzanne, a 17 year old grade 12 student at Prince of Wales Collegiate has enjoyed tremendous success over the past number of years and has just returned from the Senior Nationals in Edmonton. The Torbay resident holds numerous provincial records, and last season qualified for the Olympic Trials in Montreal.

In the 1995 Junior Nationals she won a gold medal in the 800 metre freestyle swim and a bronze in the 400 metre freestyle swim. She was named Newfoundland Junior female athlete of the year in 1995 and 1996 and was a member of Canada's Youth Team in 1995.
