The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador Parks/Recreation Association:

Canadian Parks and Recreation Association Symposium 97

Recreation within Canada is scheduled for a very close review when the 1997 Canadian Parks/Recreation Association holds its annual conference in St. John's, August 10 to 13.

About 500 recreation professionals and volunteers from across Canada will attend the conference that is set for the Delta Hotel.

"This symposium will include a dynamic program that will challenge those attending to re-discover parks and recreation," says Heather Hickman, co-chair of the City of St. John's hosting committee.

Speaking of the vital support that has been provided by the host, City of St. John's, Hickman said, in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Parks/Recreation Association, we are committed to providing an exceptional educational and social experience for those attending.

Co-chair Ray Osmond joined with Hickman in encouraging as many delegates and their families as possible to attend.

"The 500th anniversary of the discovery of our province will provide an exciting opportunity for conference delegates and all our visitors," Osmond explained. "They will be involved in the adventure of the celebrations and will have a chance to experience the province's unique culture."

"We all feel this is a great environment for the hosting of a symposium that will challenge delegates to reflect on the past, as a method of bringing new perspectives on the future," Osmond said.

Hickman stressed "the symposium will feature high calibre speakers. There are a series of workshops and other events all geared towards having those attending re-discover parks and recreation."

Backed completely by individuals such as Premier Brian Tobin, St. John's Mayor John Murphy, Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Denine, Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly, and Newfoundland and Labrador Parks/Recreation president Greg Hillier, the conference will attract considerable attention.

"There will be an awards luncheon honouring some of the individuals who have made major contributions to recreation, a trade show and educational sessions, social events which all come together as a very positive and very worthwhile venture," Osmond said.

Hickman was confident that "arrangements for the conference are on schedule and the various details are being finalized. We will certainly be ready for the arrival of the first delegates."
