Take a Hike: Provincial parks get ready to host activities

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today a line-up of summer activities and events that are taking place in the provincial parks. "I invite everyone, especially families and friends, to come out to the parks to enjoy and to learn more about our natural environment," Minister Kelly said.

  • The following events are scheduled:

    PARKS DAY - JULY 19
    This year, more than 250 Parks Day celebrations will be held in parks and historic sites across Canada. Here in our province, seven provincial parks will hold celebration activities: Barachois Pond, Butter Pot, J.T. Cheeseman, Notre Dame, Pistolet Bay, Squires Memorial, and Cape St. Mary's.

    PARK OFFICER FOR A DAY - JULY 19
    This is a fun contest for children between the ages of 8-13. The winner will be proclaimed as an Honorary Park Officer for the following day. He or she will have breakfast with park staff on Sunday morning, and will also receive a plaque and a T-shirt.

    All 14 provincial parks will participate in this event: Barachois Pond, Blow Me Down, Butter Pot, Dildo Run, Frenchman's Cove, J.T. Cheeseman, La Manche, Lockston Path, Notre Dame, Pinware River, Pistolet Bay, Sandbanks, Squires Memorial and Cape St. Mary's.

    TAKE A HIKE - JULY 19
    Take a Hike is a fun, family-oriented hiking event to help raise awareness and funds for Canada's parks and historic sites. This event provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about our natural and cultural heritage through interpretive hiking, walking and other related events. Four provincial parks are participating in this event: Barachois Pond, Butter Pot, J.T. Cheeseman and Cape St. Mary's.

    INTERPRETATION WEEK - JULY 24 - 28
    Interpretation Week is a week of activities designed to increase adults' awareness of the environment as well as children's. Five provincial parks will be taking part in these activities: Barachois Pond, Butter Pot, J.T. Cheeseman, Notre Dame and Cape St. Mary's.

Activities will vary from one participating park to another. The public is advised to contact each park individually to find out more details on these events.
