May 29, 1997 More parks set to open for the summer season Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that privatization arrangements have been concluded for two more parks that are set to open within the next few weeks. The minister also announced the opening dates for four provincial parks. Government is currently in the process of concluding the final arrangements on the remaining 10 private parks. "These two newly privatized parks once again reflect the public's interest and enthusiasm in acquiring viable rural business opportunities," the minister said. "Of course, it also indicates the success of the privatization process, which is fully meeting the demands of the camping public." Both of the new privatized parks are located on the west coast of the island. They are listed below with the number of available campsites identified in parentheses.
Four more of the province's 20 provincial parks will open for the summer season on Friday, May 30. They are: Sandbanks (25), Sir Richard Squires Memorial (159), J.T. Cheeseman (102) and The Arches (Natural Scenic Attraction). This brings the number of parks open within the provincial system to nine, with the remaining 11 scheduled to open on June 13. Ms. Kelly would like to wish all campers and tourists a safe and enjoyable Cabot 500th Anniversary summer. She reminds all park users to protect the environment and clean up their camping or picnic site before leaving the park. Contact: Laura Cochrane, Director of Communications, (709) 729- 0928.
