May 2, 1997 Awards presented to Arts and Letters Competition winners Judy Foote, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal, and Robert Thompson, deputy minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, presented the awards to this year's winners of the Provincial Arts and Letters Competition. Ms. Foote attended on behalf of Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, who is in Bristol, England for the launch of the Matthew. "Since the Arts and Letters Competition began 45 years ago, it has played an important role in promoting and developing the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador" Ms. Foote said. "This year's competition is particularly special as 1997 is our province's Year of the Arts - part of the Cabot 500 Anniversary Celebrations." Ms. Foote presented the prizes of $600, $300, and $150 for the respective first, second and third places, to the Senior Division winners. Thompson presented the prizes of $300, $200, and $100 for first, second and third places, respectively, to the winners of the E.J. Pratt (junior) Division, aged 12-18. Foote congratulated all the winners saying: "Your work makes a significant contribution to this province's arts community and in keeping the arts alive in our province." Each applicant is required to submit his or her creative work to either the senior or junior divisions of the competition. The senior division categories are: poetry; fictional prose/short story (max. 500 words); non-fictional prose; dramatic script; musical composition; photography; painting and three dimensional art; and drawing and print making. The junior division consists of three categories: prose; poetry; and visual art. Over the years, the interest in the Arts and Letters Competition has increased. This year, the Arts and Letters Committee received 1,140 submissions - an indicator of strong interest in the program. Julia Pickard, chairperson of the Arts and Letters Committee, was delighted with the response the competition received this year, and says the committee looks forward to seeing as many, if not more, entries in next year's competition. The closing date for submissions is Friday, March 6, 1998. Contact: Regina Best, Arts and Letters Competition Office, Arts and Culture Centre, (709) 729-5253.
