(Tourism, Culture and Recreation)

NOTE TO EDITORS:

On Thursday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. the Arts and Letters Committee will be holding its awards evening at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John's to present awards to this year's winners of the Provincial Arts and Letters Competition.

Judy Foote, Minister of Development and Rural Renewal, will bring greetings and present the awards on behalf of Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, who will be in Bristol, England for the launch of the Matthew.

The Arts and Letters Committee, in conjunction with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, has held the competition every year since 1952, to increase interest in the arts in Newfoundland and Labrador, and to encourage artists in their work. Some of the province's most notable artists have been previous winners of the competition.

Media representatives are invited to attend.

For more information, please contact Regina Best, secretary of the Arts and Letters Committee, at (709) 729-5253.
