The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation :

Provincial Girls Basketball Tournaments

The first weekend of High School Athletic Federation provincial basketball championships are scheduled for the March 14-15 weekend. Thirty-four girls teams have qualified and registered for the tournaments.

The A girls tournament is being co-hosted by St. Pius X in Baie Verte and St. Peters in Westport. A total of eight teams will compete in the two division event. Division 1 will be played at Beothuck Collegiate gym and will feature Lakewood Academy (Greenwood), Fatima Academy (St. Brides), Long Island Academy and the host, St. Peters. Division 2 will play at the St. Pius gym and will see action between the host, St. Pius, St. Joseph's (Bay de Verde), Bonne Bay Academy and Holy Name of Mary (Lawn). A total of 12 round robin games will be played starting at 4 p.m. Thursday and all day Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

The 2A girls tournament is the largest of the weekend with 10 teams competing. Belanger Memorial in Doyles will host the tournament. The format will be a double knock out tournament, starting at 9 a.m. Thursday. Each team will continue to play until they have two losses at which time they are eliminated. A total of 18 games will be played with the final championship scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Saturday. The following teams have qualified for the tournament: J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Dunne Memorial (St. Mary's), St. John Bosco (St. John's), Our Lady of Peace (Happy Valley-Goose Bay), Fitzgerald Academy (English Harbour West), St. Augustines (Plum Point), St. Michael's All Grade (Arnolds Cove), St. Lawrence Central High and Deer Lake Pentecostal School.

St. Michael's High School in Grand Falls-Windsor is the host for the 3A girls championship. A total of eight teams will be competing for the provincial title. In Division 1, Elwood Regional High (Deer Lake), the host, St. Mikes, St. Catherines (Salmonier) and Vaters Collegiate (St. John's) will play off while in Division 2, St. James (Port aux Basques), Fogo Island Central High, St. Francis (Harbour Grace) and Menihek Intergrated (Labrador City) will compete for the top playoff spots. Games will be played at St. Michael's and Grand Falls Academy gyms beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday. The championship game is set for 4 p.m. Saturday.

The girls 4A championships will be hosted by St. Stephen's High in Stephenville. Eight teams set up in two divisions will compete for the provincial title. In the A division O'Donel High (Mount Pearl), the host St. Stephen's, Gander Collegiate and Clarenville Intergrated will compete for the two spots. Division B will see action from Prince of wales Collegiate (St. John's), Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Regina High (Corner Brook), and Roncalli High (Avondale). Games will be played at both St. Stephen's High and the West Coast Training Centre. The tournament is set to begin 5 p.m. Thursday. The championship game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Keyin Technicial College and the School Milk Foundation/Dairy Producers are the sponsors of the federation. Keyin will present sportsmanship awards to an individual in each tournament. Milk will sponsor the "Free Throw for Milk" competition and provide a T-shirt and basketball to the winner. Zap, the Milk mascot will be making an appearance at selected tournaments as well. The winning team in each tournament will receive the championship banner as well as gold medals.
