Cross Country Skiing Provincials set to go
The High School Athletic Federation continues its calendar of
provincial tournaments on the weekend of February 21 and 22, with
the Provincial Cross Country Skiing Championships. St. Augustines
in Plum Point is the host for the competition. Only teams from
the St. Barbe- Labrador and Western regions of the province will
compete in the event. The lack of consistent snow in many areas
has affected the participation in this event for the second year
in a row. The 1996 high school championships were cancelled
because of lack of snow. Championships will be contested in
senior and junior boys and girls and junior girls team and
individual events.
The individual races will be run in the classical style and
will be run over the following distances; Junior Girls 2.5 kilometres, Senior Girls five
kilometres, Junior Boys five kilometres, Senior Boys 7.5 kilometres. The start of the
individual races will be a staggered start with 30 seconds
between races. The top three finishers per team from the
individual races will compete in the relay. The start will be a
mass start using the following distances; Junior Girls 0.5 kilometres, Junior Boys, Senior Girls, Senior Boys, one kilometre
each. The relay races will be run using freestyle technique.
Awards will be presented for the top three finishers in the
individual races as well as the top two teams in each division.
The winning team will be awarded the championship banner.
The School Milk Foundation and the Dairy Farmers of
Newfoundland and Labrador as well as Keyin Technical College are
the corporate sponsors for the event.
