NOTE TO EDITORS:
Arthur D. Reid, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, will sign a proclamation today to officially declare the week of August 18 to 24 as Local Government Awareness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. Also participating in the signing ceremony will be Sam Synard, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities, and Gerard Lewis, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Municipal Administrators.
The signing will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the main lobby of the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affaris which is located on the 1st Floor of the West Block, Confederation Building.
Mr. Reid said there will be special emphasis during this week to:
encourage greater participation in local municipal elections which are scheduled for September 30;
increase understanding of the importance of local government; and
involve Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in activities to increase pride in their communities.
