Minister releases new geological map of Labrador

Charles J. Furey, Minister of Mines and Energy, today released a new geological map of Labrador.

"The new geological map is a major initiative for the mines branch. The publication represents two and a half decades of work during which the provincial and federal geological surveys have remapped large parts of Labrador," says Furey. "While the geological mapping of Labrador is by no means complete, the new information gathered has resulted in important advances in our knowledge of the geology and mineral potential of this region."

The map is directed principally at those with an interest in the geological resources of Labrador and replaces a geological map published in 1972 now considered out of date. "The new map is being released at a critical time given the enormous interest in the region created by the Voisey's Bay discovery," says Furey. "The mineral-exploration industry has already shown considerable interest in this new product, and it is anticipated that it will serve as a foundation for future project generation and exploration planning in Labrador well into the future."

The map, produced by geoscientific and cartographic staff of the department's Geological Survey Division, is available as both a conventionally printed full-colour product, and as a digital version suitable for integration with other technical data in computer databases. The printed map measures 1.5 x 1 metre and is composed of a main central panel, which is the geology map at the 1:1 million scale, and surrounding accessory panels that depict the location of major mineral deposits and other geological features. The digital version is available for retrieval from either CD-ROM disks or the Internet. "This form of digital publication represents the way of the future for geological data and is being pioneered by the department's Geological Survey Division," added Furey.

Dr. Richard Wardle, one of the key geologists involved in the research and production of the new map will explain the significance of the map during the morning session of the Mines Branch 21st annual Review of Activities at the Delta Hotel on Thursday, November 6. Both versions of the map will be on display and available for purchase on Thursday.
