The following is being distributed at the request of Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board:

Amoco West Bonne Bay exploratory well approved

The Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board announced today that it has issued an approval to drill a well to Amoco Canada Petroleum Company Ltd. for its West Bonne Bay exploratory well in the Jeanne d'Arc basin offshore Newfoundland. Petro Canada and Norsk Hydro are partners in the well.

Amoco et al West Bonne Bay C-23 is located at 46 32'14" north; 48 19'03" west, approximately 352 kilometres (190 nautical miles) east- south-east of St. John's Newfoundland. Amoco expects to spud the well on July 27, 1997. The projected total depth of the well is 4,350 metres. Drilling is expected to take three to four months.
